Fok not allergic to meeting

Rebecca Urban | May 20, 2008

HUTCHISON Telecommunications chairman Canning Fok reckons a lot has changed in Sydney since he called it home in the mid-1970s.

For instance, the historic Rocks precinct, where he's been staying at the Park Hyatt, has had quite a makeover, although one of his favourite restaurants, Phillips Foote, is still there.

Perhaps Fok should have eaten there on Saturday evening, instead of a well-known television industry hangout north of the Harbour Bridge. After supping with some colleagues, the Hong Kong-based businessman broke out in welts and blotches all over his skin. The doctor had to be called and meetings scheduled for Sunday were cancelled.

While Fok pointed the finger of blame at the oysters or the dessert wine, he bravely fronted Hutchison's annual meeting yesterday to sing the praises of the telco's "3" network, which has been beating its bigger rivals Optus and Vodafone for new customers.
